Season stretching

On the way home from the grocery last night, I saw an unexpected sight: a tall evergreen that was covered with colored lights. Yes, a Christmas tree on display in someone's front yard. Not just before Thanksgiving, but October 27!!! OK, granted this is WIsconsin and we've already seen snow flurries and felt winter's icy breath blowing down our necks, so I understand the practicality of getting decorations up when the weather's still relatively decent. Sure beats trying to decorate with snow on the ground and frostbite a possibility. Maybe they were just checking the connections to make sure the lights worked and the tree evenly covered. Maybe ...
Maybe, it's just another sign of season stretching, extending the secular observances just a bit more each year so that the period from late September to early October when the cornstalks and pumpkins appear in yards morph into trees and reindeer for one long "Holiday" season that extends through the New Year to Valentine's Day.
If so many days and weeks qualify for special decorations and celebrations, will we finally get to the point that a true holiday is one which is free from any kind of designation?
